Samsung YP-K5 Review

Samsung YP-K5 has a very interesting feature. You can slide the back of the device open and reveal a pair of suprisingly good 1" speakers. At the same time the display changes to landscape mode. The YP-K5 has touch sensitive buttons and takes a little time getting used to. When powered on the controls and the screen lights up in a stylish blue colour.

The bundled earphones are above the norm but are not so comfortable. If you buy a new set of headphones the sound quality is great a little better than the iPod. There are only 5 EQ presets and you cannot create your own. The Bass Boost gives the built in speakers a more fulfilling sound.

The Samsung YP-K5 comes with a built in good FM radio. Auto scanning is fast and the reception is great, the ear buds needs to be plugged-in to listen to the radio but this is what makes the reception so good.

YP-K5 also comes with a great alarm clock feature. With the built-in speakers the mp3-player is perfect for the job. The alarm can be programmed to your needs.

The device can only play WMA and MP3 files. The transfer speeds are fast and are done easily with the bundled software of with Windows Media Player. The battery life is great 30 hours when listening to MP3 using ear buds and 6 hours using the speakers.

Pros: Slide out speakers, excellent sound quality, stunning interface, great FM Radio, excellent choice if you want to share your music with others.

Cons: The screen can be very hard to see in sunlight, quite large (because of the speaker), the touch screen takes time getting used to, small screen for viewing photos.

Bottom line:  Samsung has designed an excellent and innovative MP3 player with great features. The integrated speakers sound better than you should expect. If you intend to use the speakers regularly the YP-K5 is a great deal but otherwise there are better players with more capacity in the same price range.
